It is important not to confuse custom made boots with made-to-measure boots. They should probably always go together, but sometimes they don't.
Custom made boots mean that
you get to choose the type of leather, height, toe and heel style,
colors, stitching, inlays or anything else that ruffles your feathers.
Custom boots are made to your exact specifications. This is a big
plus but it has nothing to do with fit.
Made to measure, a different
option, means that your boots are made to the exact measurement of your
feet. Most custom boot makers will send you instructions on how to
properly measure your foot. They usually include a form on which
to make a tracing of both feet. Also boxes to fill in showing the
measurement of the ball of each foot, the waist, instep, heel, ankle,
calf and your desired height.
Many people can wear a
standard size without any problem. If you are one of those people
be aware that a shoe size does not always convert to a boot size.
A cowboy boot often needs to be a half-size larger than your normal shoe
size.
Shoes and boots that tie can adjust in size to some degree. Pull
on boots have to fit right from the start. If you are unsure of
your correct stock size, it's best to go to a local dealer and try on a
few pairs to determine what feels the best. Then you can go and
order the boots of your dreams.
Here are some tips to getting
the perfect fit:
- Try your boots on in the afternoon, after you have been on your feet for
an extended amount of time.
- Try your boots on inside on carpeted floor first. Give them a try. This
will allow you to feel how they fit without showing any signs of wear on
the boots.
- Remember to wear the socks that you plan to wear with the boots. On Western Boots, the boot must slip slightly in the heel. When a boot
is new, the sole is stiff. As you wear the boot, the sole is "flexed".
With time most of the slippage you feel will disappear. If the slip
feels excessive you may want to wear a thicker sock or you may need a
narrower fit. Note though that slight slippage is necessary to obtain a
proper fit.
- With leather boots remember, that as you continue to wear the boots they
will stretch slightly and soften over time.
